Oh Fall. I've missed you so.....
The wind in the trees, the leaves fluttering down into the yard, the quiet evenings, the crisp cool smell. *swoooon*
Is it beginning to look something like this in your neck of the woods? I know, I know. Some of you are on the other half of the world and heading into an opposite season.... but do you see it changing, wherever you're at? Such a time to take notice of what is going on out there....
The CSA is starting to shift seasonally too. Even though we're at the last few weeks of our "summer" share, the fall crops are starting to become available. I couldn't be happier. It's soup season, you know? And more root vegetables are so good for making a bowl of curry, or veggie soup, or stir fry.
This week's Farm Share included:
cabbage * kale * salad greens * asian greens * radish * turnips * rainbow carrots * broccoli
potatoes * onions * peppers * delicata squash * cherry, juliet & slicing tomatoes
When I read our newsletter before the pickup I was *so*excited* about the squash! Delicata is one of my favorites. I really love all squash, but it's one of the best for sure. Sliced into rings, insides scooped out & baked with sweet or savory seasonings....... If you've got fresh herbs, that's an added bonus! A few of my favorite combinations:
Sage, olive oil, salt & pepper~
Cilantro, coconut oil, lime, paprika & cumin~
Coconut oil, maple syrup, cinnamon & nutmeg~
Plus the roasted seeds are delicious too! I like them salty & the kids like cinnamon sugar.
Speaking of the kids, they totally squealed at seeing broccoli return. There is truly nothing like good farm fresh broccoli and they know it. They would have each eaten an entire head of it on the way home if I'd have agreed. But being a mama, I gave them some line about other people loving broccoli (and carrots) and how we should save it and share it with everyone. Blah, blah, blah. They did eat half a bunch of kale on the way home.... because they're just crazy like that.
Here are a few wonderful recipes for you:
Sweet Potato Chicken Chili (sub the potatoes for squash and swap the chicken for more beans to fit your needs)
Cabbage + Bacon + Pasta (serve with a big green salad and you'll likely have some very happy kids!)
Stuffed Tomatoes (you really should see this picture, amazing delicious-ness!)
Chipotle Glazed Squash with Rice & Black Beans
Kale & Sausage Stuffed Delicata
Roasted Veggie & Ricotta Pizza (this is awesome!)
And while we're on the subject of local food..... who knows of a great place to pick apples kinda sorta close to Providence, RI? I'd especially be grateful if you could suggest one that uses organic practices.
Happy local eating to you~~
xo,
s
You know, for the first time in my life, I'm sitting in my office, looking outside and seeing signs of fall. I have leaves falling out of trees. Cool evenings (not as cool as you I'm sure), some trees changing color. It's pretty amazing.

And as I'm posting this, my lovely husband is chopping wood for the winter. Man, how our lives have changed.

I don't know of any apple orchards near by, but please let me recommend my friend's farm for any meats or eggs you might need--Pat's Pastured. He's done an amazing job growing a responsible farm in RI and is at many farmer's markets and does CSAs as well. Several good friends lived in Providence 10+ years ago....I also remember Seven Stars bakery as a tasty place to go. I hope you are enjoying fall!! It's here in Maine too--looking forward to the Common Ground Fair this weekend and to apple picking on Sunday. Enjoy the change of season!!

Thank you Jenny! So funny, we just heard about Pat's Pastured! Someone mentioned it to Joe at work. We'll definitely be looking into that! Seven Stars is *amazing*, you are so right. We stop in for treats whenever we're in the city. We hope to make it to the Common Ground next fall. This one was just too busy to fit something else into it. Have a wonderful time this weekend!
